One of the nation's most important wintering grounds for redheads is the vast, shallow, Laguna Madre bay system on the backside of Padre Madre system on the backside of Padre Island. Though declining along the eastern seaboard, redheads are common winter residents along the southern Texas coast.

The drake redhead is a handsome bird with golden yellow eyes that are the most striking eyes of any common duck species.

Minnesota artist Joe Hautman painted this year's Texas Waterfowl Stamp art. Hautman and his two brothers, Jim and Bob, have achieved legendary status in wildlife art circles. Joe Hautman won the Federal Duck Stamp competition for 2009, 2002, and also in 1992. One of the Hautman brothers has won the federal contest 12 times since 1990. Joe Hautman also painted the 1997 Texas Non Game Stamp art.
