Autumn Leaves - Spotted Owl By Rod Frederick

Autumn Leaves - Spotted Owl by Rod Frederick

Deep in the Pacific Northwest forest a spotted owl surveys his domain. The vine and big leaf maples splash the brilliant fall colors of orange and red across the muted green woodland. A few threads of fog wind through the trees, eerily contrasting with the stillness of the scene.

The spotted owl appears to be motionless, striking the statue-like pose for which owls are famous. Yet these birds have keen eyesight. At the least sign of movement, the spotted owl will burst into motion, winging silently to the forest floor to pounce on a chipmunk, squirrel or snake.

"Autumn Leaves" captures a moment before dramatic action, as well as the greater drama of time and change. Currently identified as a threatened species, the spotted owl faces the loss of its unique habitat. Living in the older-growth forests of the west as far south as Mexico, this bird, unlike some other owls, cannot adapt to open meadows or relatively new deciduous forests. Unless action is taken to preserve its habitat, the future of the spotted owl may be colder than the chill of any autumn wind.
