The Signal - Blackfoot American Indian By Howard Terpning

By Howard Terpning

The Signal by Howard Terpning

On a snow covered hill, in a bitter cold wind, a Blackfeet warrior waves his buffalo robe as a signal to his companions. If the Indians didn't have a buffalo hide, they would use a blanket. This was a fast and effective visual method of relaying information.

In this painting, although the horse is standing quietly, there is an opportunity to get a feeling of action by the movement of the robe. Such a robe or a blanket would be the largest item he would be likely to carry with him on the trail and therefore the most easily seen at a distance. His horse, protected by a heavy coat of winter hair, would not be likely to win a modern show, but he was wiry and tough and served the Plains Indian well in the days when the native American was still free to roam. (The art of Howard Terpning - Elmer Kelton).
