May Maple - Scarlet Tanager By Robert Bateman

May Maple - Scarlet Tanager by Robert Bateman

"The scarlet tanager is perhaps the most vivid, almost tropical-looking bird of the temperate zone. He seems out of place in the green deciduous forests of the northeast, but that is where he belongs. The red is really what I call vermilion, a sort of orange red rather than scarlet. It seems to be lit from within, even on dull days."

"Each year my first view of this bird is in mid-spring, just as the maple leaves begin to push out of their buds. They are usually wrinkled and rusty as they start to unfold. The sugar maple flowers are already in full bloom, but they are seldom noticed by people. If, however you examine them closely, you will find them very spectacular in a diminutive way. I feel that the long dangling stamens fit with the opulent look of the tanager." ~ Robert Bateman
