White - Footed Mouse In Wintergreen By Robert Bateman

White-Footed Mouse in Wintergreen by Robert Bateman

Mice are Much Maligned and usually unjustly so. I like mice very much and, in fact, for many years I made a study of them. there are about 8 different species living in my area and dozens of different kinds in various parts of North America. Most of them keep to themselves in woods and meadows. All native mice are clean in their personal habits. One or two may cause problems to farmers and this one can be a nuisance in your cottage. He normally lives in the woods under roots and logs, but if you build a house in the woods he may find your bedding and cereal too tempting to resist. The vast majority are cleaner and more fastidious than most of us humans. I like mice very much. They are attractive and delicate with soft fur in a variety of colors. They are industrious and quite intelligent. They donít exhibit the laziness and cruelty sometimes found in manís favorite pets.

This mouse is a fully mature adult in his two-tone brown and white. He is where he belongs, in the woods. The entrance to one of his burrows is graced with a clump of fragrant wintergreen. ~ Robert Bateman
