Late Winter - Black Squirrel by Robert Bateman

"The black squirrel is a color phase of the gray squirrel. It is possible to have black and gray babies in the same litter. The gray squirrel is far more widespread, but in part of its range, you may have a mixture with the black being more common. Some rodents such as chipmunks and groundhogs hibernate, but squirrels do not. In fact, they are famous for storing nuts for the winter. They climb into trees in the fall and industriously cut down nuts and cones. Many of these are buried here and there in the ground. It is debatable how many are remembered and actually dug up for food in the winter. This habit is certainly a great help in perpetuating the species of trees because the planted nuts often grow into trees and, of course, future nut supplies for future squirrels, but I am sure that the individual squirrel does not think of this."

"I have shown this squirrel near a young red oak tree, possibly planted by himself or another squirrel. It is late winter; the snow is thick, hard and crystalline. The leaves often stay on all winter. The sun's rays have reflected off them producing a little circle of warmth, melting a slight pit. The squirrel may see this as a weak spot in the crust through which he can dig for an almost forgotten nut." . ~ Robert Bateman
