"This painting is a good example of painting one’s dreams. In 25 years, traveling and hiking the wild in the U.S. and Canadian parks and national forests, I never was lucky enough to see a cougar in the wild. The only sign I got was tracks in some muddy dirt. So, what more can I do than paint one the way I always wanted to see it? In reality it would be dangerous to meet one so close, but in a painting, one doesn’t risk anything. Creating the feeling of being close to the animals often is the challenge in my paintings."

"Part of the animal is hidden in the dense vegetation (like the rabbit brush), which creates more of a mysterious feeling. In this scene, I tried to portray a moment of encounter with a beautiful wild creature, when venturing in a wild area, feeling safe that it wouldn't see me as prey."

"But the real inspiration came with the very interesting background. It was during a hiking trip in the high desert around Bend, Oregon, together with my good friend, Rod Frederick. The low afternoon sun made the rocky slope very interesting with subtle shapes of ochre colors. The contrast with the vegetation made it settle in my mind as the basis for a great future painting. Such photographic references can sit in my studio for years before I use them in a painting." ~ Carl Brenders
