The smallest of our geese, the Ross" Goose is about the size of a Mallard duck and is almost a miniature replica of the Snow Goose. 1977 - 1978 Federal Duck Stamp and Print painted By wildlife artist Martin R. It was named in 1861 after Bernard Rogan Ross, who was Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company and a correspondent of the Smithsonian Institution.

It was not until 1940 that the nesting grounds of the Ross' Goose was discovered on a lake in a tributary of the Perry River about 50 miles north of the Arctic circle.

The Ross' Goose begins its path of migration with many other species from its breeding grounds to Great Slave Lake and Lake Athabasca, but he parts company with his traveling companions at the national border line and flies southwest across the Rock Mountains to winter in central and southern California.
