Out On A Limb - Raccoons By Charles Frace

Out on a Limb - Raccoons by Charles Frace'

Its bandit like mask and bushy, ringed tail make the raccoon one of North America’s most recognizable and endearing animals. Playful, clever, and very adaptable, the raccoon (Procyon lotot) has adjusted well to mankind’s intrusion into its habitat and remains plentiful throughout most of the U.S., Central America and southern Canada.

The long fingers and claws of its forepaws make the raccoon an agile climber, swimmer, and fisherman. Even raccoons just a few weeks old, as Frace has painted, can readily scurry up a tree. They quickly realize, however, that finding a safe path back down to the ground does not come as instinctively as their easy climb up.

By their perplexed expressions and unsteady grips, it is plain to see that these furry infants, fresh from the den, have much to learn about this strange new world that now finds them “Out on a Limb”.
