Big Bills Barreling - Bluebill Ducks In By Les Kouba

Big Bills Barreling - Bluebill Ducks In by Les Kouba was published in 1972 by the American Wildlife Art Galleries (AWAG)

Big Bills was inspired by a trip to Jimmy Robinson’s Duck Camp on the Great Delta Marsh in Manitoba, Canada. When I visited Jimmy’s, I always took my camera and plenty of film along. The hunting is so superb that by 8 o’clock in the morning you’ve shot your limit. I like to stay on the marsh for another hour or so and photograph the ducks and geese as they decoy in.

My long suit is bluebills and I love to watch them as they glide in almost like a maple leaf-a kind of zig-zagging dance. As they glide in, there’s a moment of no return. It happens right before the bills settle in. It’s this moment that I wanted to catch. For the hunter, this painting says it all. -Les C. Kouba.
