These races pose varying degrees of identification difficulties; at time biologists have resorted to using the terms "large," "medium," and "small" in distinguishing birds whose winter populations mix. Small races: 22"-27" (56-68.5 cm); medium and large races: 32-48" (81.5-122cm).
