This is a scenic painting of the Northwest with the three trappers and their pack horses as part of the landscape. They are pausing at the edge of a river, deciding where to cross.

The logs in the foreground were deposited by spring runoff when the water was high and grass has grown up around them. Visually, they lead the eye to the trappers who are spotlighted by the early morning sun streaking across the meadow. The dark pine trees and cloud shadows on the mountains lend drama to the scene.
