Chiricahua Raiders - Apache Indians By Frank McCarthy

By Frank McCarthy

Chiricahua Raiders by Frank McCarthy.

The land we know as southwestern New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico, was once the territory of the Chiricahua Apache. It was a hard-won, seldom secure homeland. From the mid-1500's on, the Chiricahua fought off invasions of Spaniards, Comanches, Mexicans and later, white settlers.

Children raised to the sound of the war whoop grew to adulthood in a wary, combative community. The constant warring bred a tribe who learned to survive by aggressive use of their fighting skills. Their frequent raids led them to be called "the enemy people" and it is small wonder such a tribe would eventually produce a fierce war chief named Geronimo.

In "Chiricahua Raiders," a stealthy band of Chiricahua Apache leave their mountain hideout for a raid against their less prepared neighbors.
