The solitary existence of the old-time mountain man is somewhat of an enigma to modern day society. Choosing to isolate himself from contact with his fellow man, he led a life of constant adventure, never knowing what unexpected hardship or pleasure awaited him next.

Here, a mountain man with his pack horses is making his necessary but somewhat reluctant descent from the wilderness into the frontier community. After trading his most recent cache of furs for supplies, he will head back to the mountains to continue trapping. The bead-work on his shirt indicates that this mountain man trades with Indians or perhaps has an Indian wife waiting for his return into the mountains.
