"What I was trying to achieve with this painting was an interplay of dark's and lights, using the contrasting color patterns of paint horses, Indians and background. The Indian on the left has his personal medicine bundle with him. This long, tubular object, with its sacred contents, was used to ward off evil and to help protect him from his enemies." ~ Howard Terpning
