"Whitetail bucks rarely engage in full-blown, knock-down fights, because they mostly behave like teenage boys in a small neighborhood; their territory is relatively small, and for much of the year they hang out together. Like teenage boys, they test each other, participating in mock warfare called sparring. Sparring is a semi-serious game of antler-tickling and body-shoving that bucks play to determine who's the toughest so they can avoid the embarrassment and potential harm resulting from a real fight."

"By the time the rut arrives, most bucks have a firm grip on where they stand in the pecking order. But the rut does things to a buck's memory. He may forget his place when a bigger comrade interrupts him while he chases a willing doe. Or he decides to determine, once and for all, who's really the toughest with a buck he's sparred evenly with all fall. Worse yet, a strange buck from another neighborhood wanders into his turf, intoxicated by the scent of a doe in heat. Then the fighting turns deadly serious, and the whitetail with the biggest rack, strongest body, and superior genes wins the day. At least most times he does.
