I witnessed this scene when I was hunting in the Black Hills with Ron Schara and the group. We go out each spring about the middle of April. The hillsides are studded with Ponderosa pines and line cones litter the ground.

We called the gobbler and his harem to us. They’re extremely wary and cautious birds. It’s this characteristic that makes them great for hunting. I painted this scene just the way it was.
