Tundra Challengers - Fighting Caribou By Carl Brenders

Tundra Challengers - Fighting Caribou by Carl Brenders
"Who doesn’t want to witness a scene like this in a pristine wilderness like the Tundra, with its vastness and endless horizons? Though it is impossible to be this close to a duel like this, there is a good way to portray it when one masters the technique of brush and paint, combined with a good sense of imagination and knowledge of animal history."
"I never was very attracted to Caribou since my favorite deer species are elk and moose. But after following a wonderful caribou bull in the mountains in the Yukon, my feelings for this majestic and powerful animal changed completely. It was on a steep slope and the bull was standing there like a king. Hunters would be eager for such a trophy."
"But the best caribou experience was in Alaskan Denali Park, in front of Mount Mc Kinley (now Mt. Denali) with its eternal snow cover, bright in the sunlight. Our impressive double shovel caribou bull was eating just next to the trail and wasn’t bothered by my presence. (They use the shovel to get to the mosses under the snow.)"
"I was so excited by this scene that I knew immediately that it would result in a great painting. All the ingredients were there. The light was perfect, the tundra in full fall colors, and the most beautiful caribou that one could imagine. The big challenge was to transform the eating position into a powerful fighting position, the impressive antlers hooked into each other. No segregation anymore, caribou are as beautiful as elk, moose, whitetail and mule deer." ~ Carl Brenders
