Nearly Done - Safari Hunters By John Seerey-Lester

“Riding lions” was considered the most sporting of pursuits in the era of the white hunter.

"Having once found his lion, the hunter would draw it from cover by galloping past its hiding place within about 25 yards. This was a most dangerous way of taking lion and many hunters were killed in the process. The more successful way was having sighted lion, the hunters would gallop after it. One rider would try to cut off its retreat; while the other would dismount and take aim at the lion, which would now be charging the hunter."

"My painting is based on an actual incident in 1908, when after winging the lion and seeing it run for cover the white hunter and his client followed into thin cover. Satisfied the lion was “nearly done”, they dismounted and cautiously followed into long grass, knowing they were courting death. As the light was fading, it was hard for the hunters to see the angered lion as it sprang from its covert and mauled one of its pursuers. The lion was shot by the white hunter but not before it had killed his client." ~ John Seerey-Lester
