"The mute swan is a bird of Britain and Europe that has been transplanted to America and became established as a wild bird. His two American cousins, the trumpeter and whistling swans, are of the wild, remote areas of the west and north. The mute swan, on the other hand, is associated with soft landscapes of winding rivers and weeping willows or lush parks and grand estates. This is the elegant swan of poetry and songs. It is this mood of domestic tranquility which I wanted to convey in this painting."

"The cygnets, of course, are the ugly ducklings of the children's tale. They are not cute, but have a sculptural dignity of their own and are not at all like the parents. They form an interacting flotilla of individuals with the queenly mother in command."
