The Buffalo Dance By James Bama

By James Bama

The Buffalo Dance by James Bama

"The Indian names for the buffalo dance are Tatanka or Tatank and Wachipi or Watcipi. It's done to call the buffalo before the hunt. In the dance, they pretend they are the buffalo and feign its movements. We actually recreated the ceremony right outside my studio window, which is a place the Plains Indians might have done the buffalo dance a hundred and fifty years ago."

"There are buffalo tracks repeated on my model's leg and shield. The lance he's carrying has a hoop, a scalp and a cartridge case on it. Just like the horse tracks in 'Making Horse Medicine,' it's all geared to having a successful buffalo hunt on which their livelihood and survival depended." ~ James Bama
