"The American bison also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds, became nearly extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle, and has made a recent resurgence largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves. Their historical range roughly comprised a triangle between the Great Bear Lake in Canada's far northwest, south to the Mexican states of Durango and Nuevo León, and east to the Atlantic Seaboard of the United States (nearly to the Atlantic tidewater in some areas) from New York to Georgia and per some sources down to Florida."

“This is the third work of my Bison in the snow series following the 14 foot painting commissioned for the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana. There is nothing like the dramatic action of a herd of bison running through the snow. Here I have depicted the source of their movement wolves on the horizon. Since this is a herd of large bulls they will likely escape their suitors – except for two. These two bulls have made a fatal mistake by cutting too deep into the drift and will soon be belly deep in snow, restricting their ability to fend off the attack.” ~ John Banovich
