Mountain Monarch – Gyrfalcon By Robert Bateman

Mountain Monarch – Gyrfalcon by Robert Bateman

"During my university student days I was blessed to spend a summer doing geology in Arctic Quebec. Our little field party of six included two Inuit (Eskimo) helpers. We traversed a rolling tundra landscape with stunted trees in the valleys which reminded me of the rugged beauty of the Scottish highlands complete with heather and harebells. It was a naturalist's paradise. Most exciting was the abundance of raptors. The escarpment we were mapping for potential iron ore had a rough-legged hawk's nest almost every mile. There was also a golden eagle's nest and peregrine falcons were sighted most days, but the highlight of all the birds of prey was the gyrfalcon's nest with large and quite fierce young."

"Gyrfalcons come in three color phases... white, grey and black. The nest had grey phase parents and that is what I've shown in this painting. Raptors normally like to perch on high places with a lofty view so that they can scan far and wide for possible prey. In the Arctic, the trees are stunted and are found in protected hollows. Therefore gyrfalcons almost never perch on trees. Rocky promontories are where they like to be. Even when they occasionally come south in the winter they seldom choose a tree as a perch." ~ Robert Bateman
