This scene was inspired in the early fall before hunting season. I was out in the early morning bass fishing. We were working the shores very quietly and all of a sudden the deer would silently step out of the woods, look around a bit and then walk to the water’s edge to drink. I’ll always remember the peacefulness of it. I wanted to capture this. I painted the deer as a naturalist would instead of from a hunter’s viewpoint.

This painting is a favorite of mine. I like its loose, arty feeling-it really sings.
