This magnificent animal was deliberately slaughtered in an effort to control and subjugate the Plains Indian nations. These peoples used bison skins for clothing and teepees as well as the meat as a major source of their diet. This slaughter reduced numbers to a few hundred. At present there are approximately 350,000 bison. Some herds are totally wild but many are now used commercially as a more environmental method of meat production. Yellowstone Park is perhaps even more spectacular in the winter than it is in the summer.
