The Drive - Texas Longhorns By Frank McCarthy

The Drive - Texas Longhorns by Frank McCarthy

In the years following the Civil War, the Longhorn became the principal economic resource for the state of Texas.

With the wars end, soldiers returning to their Texas homes were apt to find their families penniless, their livestock stolen and their homes destroyed by marauding Indians. There was only one alternative remaining - the cattle known as the Longhorn, which had roamed the range freely and multiplied in the millions, were now claimed by whoever could get his mark on them first.

When gold was found in Colorado, it created a need for virtually unobtainable commodity - beef for the miners. Millions of cattle were trailed north to the rail heads in Kansas and shipped to mining states. "The Drive," is the portrayal of these determined men with their longhorn steer who reversed the course of Texas' economic fortune.
