Search For The Pass - Mountain Men By Howard Terpning

Search for the Pass by Howard Terpning

"I got the idea for this painting while I was hiking in a mountainous region in western Montana early one fall. The weather changed suddenly and it started to snow. Low clouds had moved in and with the rapidly falling snow, it wasn't long before the visibility became very poor. It was easy to understand how trappers, moving through the country, could find it very difficult to find their way when storms occurred.

"In this painting, the men are traveling with Crow Indian scouts. They will probably converse in sign language and decide to make camp for the night to wait out the storm. The 'Search for the Pass' must wait until the weather clears."
