"This was inspired by a photograph I took years ago of the sky over a lake just west of Minneapolis. I took it with my Bolsey, an inexpensive, but good 35mm camera. I saw the sun trying to break through the clouds, the rays were incredible. It really turned me on.

Once I saw the photograph I knew I had to paint it, but I was lacking a situation of some kind says Kouba. As a wildlife artist, I decided to use the sky for a duck painting. I had several good pictures of friends and relatives putting out decoys, so I combined the two ideas to create a composition that worked.

The camera is such a help a tool for the artist. Face it, you can’t take your easel out in all that muck and expect to paint. When customers see this painting, they always comment on the sky. For many, it’s inspirational, almost religious." ~ Les Kouba
