Impala By Charles Frace
Impala by Charles Frace'
This is a medium-sized, lightly built and very graceful antelope with a glossy coat. Unlike other animals, it exemplifies athletic grace. Its beautiful, big antelope eyes are extremely efficient, placed on the sides of the head, enabling it to watch most of the surrounding territory without turning. Its movements are very fast. And, of course, it is known for its dazzling leaps of up to ten feet high and thirty feet long. Impala are highly gregarious. Each male has a harem of 15 to 20 females. Bucks are fierce fighters during the rutting season. Other than that, they are not at all aggressive. Sometimes young and old males form bachelor herds. Impala browse on leaves of bushes, trees, and shorter grasses. They are very dependent on water. I painted a male, easily recognized by his stately and graceful horns. The female is smaller and without horns. The cheetah, leopard, wild dog, and on occasion the lion, are the Impala's principal enemies.
