No one knows where the name Shoshonis came from. They were known to the Teton Dakotas (Sioux) as Snakes and to the Crow Indians as Grass Lodges. They ranged through the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming, Utah and Idaho. Fine hunters and horsemen, this portrait is of two Shoshoni Indians as they looked in the 1860's, riding over the country that they loved so much.
