Sioux Subchief By James Bama

Sioux Subchief by James Bama

"This Native American painting shows a portrait of a Sioux Indian dressed in traditional clothing. The Sioux usually had a chief, two sub-chiefs and two lesser ones under them. You could tell who was who by the headdress. The sub-chiefs did not have full headdresses. Instead, each wore a head covering called a "wichasa."

The circles on this man's chest represent the sun's power to heal Sun Dance wounds. There are lightning bolts painted around his eyes, denoting his courage and fierceness. His war shield and its colors represent his vision." ~ James Bama
