The Coup By Frank McCarthy

The Coup by Frank McCarthy.

The victorious Indian in feathered war bonnet is about to touch a fallen enemy with his coup stick. A coup was like a score point in the game of war. If a warrior could touch the enemy with a coup stick, shield, bow or gun, this was more important than whether or not he killed him for a coup was taken at very close range and denoted the bravery as well as skill . . . especially when the enemy was armed.

Feathers in the war bonnet, stripes across the horse's nose or the feathers in its battle-tied tail may represent past coups. The lightning streak from shoulder to neck is to give the horse speed and energy in battle. The hoof marks painted across the hips denote horse raids. This canvas was published February 2013.
