Blackfeet Spectators - Native American Indians By Howard Terpning

Blackfeet Spectators by Howard Terpning

This is a color study of Blackfoot Indians. When they were in camp, much time was spent on ceremonies and hence there always would be spectators as well as those involved in the ceremony. This scene afforded an opportunity to paint the Blackfeet at a time when they were rich and full of pride.

This painting is the artist's answer to those who would say that all Indians - or members of any other race but their own - look alike to them. That these happen to be Blackfeet is incidental; they are representative of Plains Indians as a whole. Each has a face distinctly his own, and each is reacting differently to whatever ceremony or dance is gripping their attention. One is skeptical, one is disappointed and one is faintly amused.

The artist strove to give each of the three men a distinctive look though careful detailing of the hands, leggings, necklaces, beaded moccasins and hairpieces, while keeping all the accouterments within Blackfeet tradition. (from the book The Art of Howard Terpning - Elmer Kelton).
