Zz Stamp 1959 - 1960 Federal Duck Stamp Print - Black Labrador & Mallard By Maynard Reece

1959 - 1960 Federal Duck Stamp and Print drawn By wildlife artist Maynard Reece.

In 1959, Maynard learned the Federal Duck Stamp Competition program was encouraging artists to enter designs featuring a retrieving dog. The government felt this would emphasize the dog's roll in conservation by retrieving wounded or dead ducks that would otherwise be lost. It had been 8 years since Maynard had entered the Duck Stamp Competition so he decided to try again. He chose King Buck, a Labrador Retriever, and National Retrieving Champion owned by John Olin. Making sketches of the dog at his home at Nilo Kennels, Maynard designed the stamp and submitted it to the contest. He won again making this the third win in only four tries. Many have called this stamp the most popular of all the duck stamps. Black and white wash and tempera drawing of a Labrador retriever carrying a Mallard by Maynard Reece, the first artist to win the competition three times.
