The success of “Headin’ for Shelter” gave Les Kouba the inspiration for a series based on those 13 pheasants. Les Kouba decided to paint the second picture in the series “In Shelter.” In the first painting those birds were “Headin’ for Shelter,” so it made sense that in this picture they would be “In Shelter.”

Les Kouba changed the perspective for this painting. He took the birds into the farmyard - a scene he had observed many times at his farm in Hutchinson Minnesota. He added the corn crib; the old John Deere Hay Mower held off the ground by a 50 gallon barrel, the corn sheller and even tucked a wasp nest under the eaves of the corn crib. It’s really a very typical scene, a scene you would find almost any farm in the Midwest.

Les Kouba added the cottontail rabbit to this painting, too. He decided to carry that dude along through all three paintings. Les Kouba’s collectors got a kick out of trying to find it. Another thing Les Kouba added in each of the paintings was to include a sentinel. One of the roosters was on guard in each painting. The rooster was on the fence post in “Headin’ for Shelter.” He was in the tree in “In Shelter,” and sitting on the hay loader in “Leavin’ Shelter.”
