The setting sun was temporarily obscured by one of many small, scattered, low-flying clouds that had developed late in the day. A cool, southerly breeze carried the refreshing scent of the outdoors.

A quiet peacefulness settled over the marsh, the only motion being the slight rippling of the water and the swaying of the tall marsh grass.

Suddenly, a pair of mallards broke the silence as they settled in, their wings making a whirring sound as their flight feathers knifed through the still air. They landed about twenty feet offshore and within minutes the ripples created as they struck the water had dissipated, and the stillness that prevailed.
