Thunder Speaks - Native American Indians By Howard Terpning
Thunder Speaks by Howard Terpning
"On a research trip, I was traveling with several Indians on horseback across the rolling plains of Montana," says Howard Terpning.
"Suddenly, a wind came up and the sky turned an ominous blue black. A white cloud developed and moved across the horizon from left to right, billowing into a formation that seemed to grow up from the ground amid loud claps of thunder. I knew that the incident had to be recorded, and Thunder Speaks is the result." ~ Howard Terpning

oward Terpning has always had a way of bringing his paintings to life – Thunder Speaks is no exception. Many of the rolling plains of Montana look much as they did when the Plains Indians rode across them, two centuries ago. On a contemporary research trip that Howard Terpning took with a group of Native People on those plains, the group was stopped by a sudden wind, and a rapid transformation of the sky to an ominous blue black. A clap of thunder completed the moment, and Terpning knew that this experience was the basis for a painting.
