Silent Visitor - Great Gray Owl By Tom Gross

Silent Visitor by Tom Gross

Winter of 2004-05 the year of the Great Gray Owl irruption. When thousands of owls from Canada invaded Northern Minnesota due to a severe shortage of Voles their primary diet. These owls are the largest in Northern America. They hunt both day and night, preferring edges of forest adjacent to open meadows. My painting "Silent Visitor”, is an encounter with a Great Gray Owl appearing almost ghostly in the diffuse light just into a woods. I approached cautiously within about 20 feet. This owl did not seem concerned. I was struck by the ringed facial pattern and soft amber eyes. I felt a connection with this one of God’s creatures. I hope that you can feel in some way, the moments I shared with this “Silent Visitor”.
